what is breathwork?

breathwork is observed as a health practice in which one mindfully engages rhythmic breath patterns to regulate mood, stress, and overall wellbeing through controlled function of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

The Sympathetic Nervous System

The body releases different hormones based on what messages we give it, and a lot of this happens by the way we breathe. Living in our fast-paced world, we don't realize often we engage our sympathetic nervous system.

When our breath is rapid and shallow instead of mindful and deep, This triggers the "fight or flight" response in our bodies, contributing to higher levels of stress, impact on the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and digestive system, with an overall decrease in physical health.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System

When we breathe deeply and intentionally, the parasympathetic pathway is activated through the diaphragm, resulting in a "rest and digest" relaxation period. This leads to improvement in gastrointestinal health, cellular regeneration, blood flow, healthy organ function, and more.

When paired with somatic practices like yoga or intentional movement, health benefits are likely to increase at resting rates, and the parasympathetic nervous system becomes more habitual.
